Write a poem about someone who lived at least 100 years ago, about whom you read about in history (either in history text-books or through newspapers or magazines). EXCEPT: Gandhi, Hitler, Jinnah.
Write a science poem, i.e., one which draws upon some aspect of the sciences. It could be astronomy, or optics, or organic chemistry, or a particular metal, or a biochem experiment.
Put pen to paper and start writing furiously for five minutes. Set an alarm or something, and then stop writing. Go back and look at what you wrote, and then construct a poem out of that material.
Write a rondeau which is going to be hard. So I will not impose any thematic restrictions. Just remember the basic principles of rhyme and refrain and see what happens.
And here’s how we will make it interesting. One of the six key words (with which you end any one of the six lines of the first stanza) should be either ‘heat’ or ‘cool’ or ‘tepid’.
